The Pattern in the Prodigal Son
The Second Born Pattern in the Experience of the Prodigal Son :
Luke 15:11-12, 13-14, 17-18, 19-20, 21-22, 23-25, 31-32
~~ Work in Process ~~
In the parable of The Prodigal Son, we see a powerful story of redemption and forgiveness. As we read in the verses above, how the older brother resents the second born son and questions the Father’s Love and forgiveness for the prodigal son. Like the experiences of some of us when we hit rock bottom, the prodigal son finally realized that there is only one way up, and that is to repent and return to his loving father who was eagerly watching and waiting for him to come home. The prodigal son is a good example of the (first born/second born) nature being expressed in one individual. (Rom3: 23-24)
The statement a “Work in Process”, has an interesting parallel when we consider that some variation of the prodigal experience may be “in Process” today (or in the past) for every one of us. (Eph2:4-5 and 6-7) So now as we look at the older brother, we can see the changes he must also seek. (Eph4:22-23 and 24) (Rom.4:7-8)
As the experiences of the second born in Genesis illustrate the repetition of this “pattern”, the reader may discover a new (or perhaps renewed) understanding of the eternal importance of our “Spiritual second birth” over our first in the flesh. (John 3:6-7) (Gal.5:17) (1Cor.15:50-51, 53-54) Add to this the solid assurance that it is God’s will that none should perish. (2Peter 3:9, 11, 13) Also, a detail (that cannot be over stated) is that each person must individually “choose” to respond to the Biblical instruction to repent and to put off the old sin nature inherited from the first Adam, and to put on the True Spiritual Nature of the Last Adam. (1Cor.15:45-46, 47-48 and 49)
“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts” . . . (Heb.3:13-15)
